A writer's response to Brent Staples' Black Men In Public Spaces

Ricardo Acosta's Response to Black men In Public Spaces:
"This story is a great illustration of the Black Man's views on being seen as the perpetration when no crime has been committed. He demonstrates the feelings and thoughts that are occurring as he gets marked off as a robber or a rapist. Because of what has happened to him, he takes the higher road or the intellectual road to overcome the stigma that comes with being in his demographic. What Staples does to adjust to his situation is he whistles tunes from Beethoven and Vivaldi to make him seem like an educated person instead of resorting to violence. He knew that violence is not the right way to go because of his childhood. In his story he flashes back to his childhood in Chester, Pennsylvania and the memories of burying friends and family who were victims of shootings and stabbings. He also gives occurrences like his own and friends to prove his point that black men are perceived as robbers, rapists and worse because of their looks. The story also flows very well and has very elevated & eloquent language."

"Real" Lupe Fiasco Lyrics and Song (youtube)

Uhh, Food & Liquor
Yeah, my man said he wanted somethin real..

real.. real.. real.. real
Somethin he could recognize, somethin he could feel..
feel.. feel.. feel.. feel
Baby girl said she was in the mood for somethin real..
real.. real.. real.. real
Somethin that could make her move
Somethin she could feel.. feel.. feel.. feel

Lusssst... sometimes can override trusssst
She said that's why she gave it up
My man said blood spilled out of everything he tou-chhhhed
He crushed everything he crushed
Ruined everything he loved, he just wanted to rushhhhh
Blamed it on the times bein rough
Doin dirt, with the devil, chasin after the dusssst
Make a fussss, if it's them, but we hushhh, if it's us

That's why, my momma said she wanted somethin REAL..
real.. real.. real.. real
Somethin she could be proud of, somethin she could FEEL..
feel.. feel.. feel.. feel
She said they so used to not havin nuttin real..
real.. real.. real.. real
That they don't know how to act
They don't know how to feel.. feel.. feel.. feel

Lifffffe... ain't meant to come around twiiiice
Yeah, that's why I gotta get it right
They said I got it honest now I gotta give it LIFE
But sleep on it, that's why God give you night
I mean, I had a dream that, God gave me FLIGHT
Too fly for my own good so, God gave me plight
If I wake up in the mornin now I gotta give 'em SIGHT
[ From: http://www.elyrics.net ]
Make 'em see, break 'em free, ain't a G, sho' you right

The game is not to give 'em nuttin REAL..
real.. real.. real.. real
Nothin they could use, nuttin that they could FEEL..
feel.. feel.. feel.. feel
Give 'em a bunch of lies and teach 'em that it's REAL..
real.. real.. real.. real
So that's all that they a-know
That's all that they a-feel.. feel.. feel.. feel

Struggle... yeah yeah, another sign that God love you
Cause on the low, bein po', make you humble
Keep they names in my rhymes to try and keep them out of trouble
Cause bein po', also teach you how to hustle
All they want is some shoes or some rims for they bubble
Now that I got my own, I can hit them with a couple
Couple, my homies so they ain't got no reason to cuff you
That's my plan, if I can, on the man, up above you

That's why, I gotta give 'em somethin REAL..
real.. real.. real.. real
Somethin they could recognize, somethin they could FEEL..
feel.. feel.. feel.. feel
To my homies on the block I gotta give 'em somethin real..
real.. real.. real.. real
Somethin that'll make 'em stop
Somethin they can feel.. feel.. feel.. feel

Yo! For real, really real, yeah!
Know what it is, woo!
Baby girl said she was in the mood for somethin REAL..
real.. real.. real.. real
Let's go!

[Sarah Green - to fade]
So real.. so real..

"Real As It Gets" Jay-Z ft. Young Jeezy Lyrics and Song (youtube)

Yeah, see it's that
It's that 'Blueprint 3' shit, right here
It's that 'TM 103' shit, right here
You ready? You ready, Hov? Let's go!
Hands up!

Allow me to reintroduce myself
At the same time reintroduce my wealth
At the same time rejuvenate the game
It's for my ol' dog niggas that shoots the 'caine

Now, what my B-dawg said, I respect the game
GD's, Vice Lords, the Crips, the same
And I know y'all 'bout to say this off the chain
Tell 'em fake trappin' ass niggas stay out my lane

See I ain't dead or in jail, I can't complain
And when these fake niggas gone, I shall remain
And if you just tunin' in, let me explain
You know I keep that 47, Uday Hussein

These niggas way too far, I played the game
And if you listen hard enough I say some things
And when that sack got low, I shave them things
And put 'em right back together, I made them things

Now, put your sacks in the air if you represent your clique
Money in the air if you ever hear the lick, baby
Wave your hands in the air, if you know that you that bitch
Say you looking for the real, hey, well, this is real as it gets

Hey, hey, oh, oh
(South-side)
Hey, hey, oh, oh
(South-side)
This is real as it gets
Hey, hey, oh, oh
(South-side)
Hey, hey, oh, oh
(I got it, Jeezy)
This is real as it gets

Now, where the south-side at? Wassup, wassup?
Where the west coast at? Put your W's up
Where my east coast niggas, that hustle to live?
And all my niggas up north that's doin' a bid?

Oh yeah, I'm rare, I'm aware that I'm rare
I rap and I'm real, I'm one of the few here
These other boys lyin', I wonder if y'all care
They stories about this world, I wonder if y'all hear

It don't really matter as long as they stay clear
Clear of the real shit we doin' over here
When my nigga get home, I'm gonna send him a Lear
For all the time he been down, get him right up in the air

With a couple of broads, get him right up in the air
Mile High Club, get him right up in there
Send my nigga some gear like he never missed a year
By the time you hear this song, he'll be standing right here
Real nigga shit there

Now, put your sacks in the air if you represent your clique
Money in the air if you ever hear the lick, baby
Wave your hands in the air, if you know that you that bitch
Say you looking for the real, hey, well, this is real as it gets

Hey, hey, oh, oh
Hey, hey, oh, oh
This is real as it gets
Hey, hey, oh, oh
Hey, hey, oh, oh
This is real as it gets

A hundred million to the good and I'm still talkin' yayo
At a snails pace I won this race that y'all trail
Uh, uh, Blueprint's for sale
Follow in my footprints, you can't fail

Set sail, I used to duck shots, but now I eat quail
I'll probably never see jail
Each tale contains more of the truth
Of the statute allows me to go into detail

Uh, close your eyes, you can smell
Hov's the audio equivalent of Braille
That's why they feel me in the favelas in Brazil
And Waterhouse, 'cause real recognize real, rah

You know me, I don't need no introduction
Call me, make a lil' somethin' out of nothin'
Everywhere you go, we the topic of discussion
Damn, that's gotta be disgusting

Uh, shit make you wanna throw up
This is BigBoy Music, it should make me wanna grow-up
Flows like syrup, it just make you wanna pour up
And is it just me, or this makes you wanna roll up?

A big fat one, then unpack one
Then unwrap one, peel back one
They use to call me Jizzle with the stamp in the middle
And you can tell the color when it's damp in the middle, wassup

Now, put your sacks in the air if you represent your clique
Money in the air if you ever hear the lick, baby
Wave your hands in the air, if you know that you that bitch
Say you looking for the real, hey, well, this is real as it gets

Hey, hey, oh, oh
Hey, hey, oh, oh
This is real as it gets
Hey, hey, oh, oh
Hey, hey, oh, oh
This is real as it gets

This is real as it gets
Yeah, I am serious, straight-up
No bullshit

This I Believe Appendix

My “This I believe essay” on the topic of judging others was inspired by different components and factors in my life. Some of the thoughts that came along with the inception of my “this I believe” essay had to do with religion, experiences, literature, and pop culture. With regards to religion I am a Christian and I believe in the Bible which is the holy book of my religion and I even refer to it as the word of God. When I was doing research on this topic I found that judgment is actually a reoccurring topic in the Bible and there are many verses pertaining to the subject. One of the series of verses that I found was Matthew 7: 1-5 which states: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye (NIV).What this means to me is that we shouldn’t judge others until we completely judged ourselves and we are content with ourselves and I tried to reflect this belief of mine in my essay. Another segment of the Bible that inspired me and my beliefs is John 7: 24 which states: “Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly (NIV).I also tried to put this idea in my essay when I stated that we shouldn’t be quick to judge and at least get to know the person or their situation before judging them.
An experience that inspired my belief and essay was my experience back in summer camp when I was younger. I went to summer camp back then in an area outside my town so I only knew 2 other people from my neighborhood who were also enrolled in the same one. For the first few days we only associated with each other because we were the only people that we knew and we didn’t really try to make new friends. There was another kid who always seemed angry and who was always by himself and me and my 2 friends just assumed he was a person who we wouldn’t like or wouldn’t want to associate with. This was the case until one day when we finally introduced ourselves to him and invited him to play basketball with us. This was a good thing because he ended up becoming the 4th musketeer of our group and became a very close friend of ours for the next two years at the camp. This experience too, played a part in my choosing of this topic and the writing of my essay. One phrase that played a role in my choosing of my essay and this topic was the English idiom “don’t judge a book by its cover”. When I looked up this Idiom on Dictionary.com the phrase was defined as: “Don't judge the value of a thing simply by its appearance.” Once again this is one of the aspects that are rooted in my beliefs and the creation of my essay. An example of an example in pop culture that inspired my writing of this Essay was a music video by one of my favorite rappers entitled “The Age of Information”. In this video he speaks about his ideas about the progression of the human race and especially judgment through social media. There were many things in that video that made me think about this topic and made me write my essay on it.

My Revised "This I Believe Essay"

This I Believe Essay
One scene that I could vaguely recall from my youth was getting into a fight with a little kid and his bigger brother at a playground. This past year I brought up this fuzzy memory to my father who remembered the situation more vividly than I did. He laughed and told me that as a kid I was illiberal at times and he distinctly recalled me saying that I picked a fight with those kids out of nowhere and was angry at them because they had freckles. I in return laughed while at the same time denied my dad’s recollection of the situation. In the back of my head I knew that he was right though. I knew that he wouldn't make up something like that. Being a more mature and serene person than I was in the past, I thought to myself, “why would I get mad at a person for having freckles?”, and “was that really why I was angry that day?” Today I undoubtedly know that it’s not right to judge others at all especially before getting to know them.

I believe that a person should never judge, classify, or make generalizations about another person or group of people, especially if they have never spent time with them or got to really know them. I feel like you can’t judge others because you will never really know what another person went through and has experienced from their perspective. When I say this I am not trying to defend anyone who has ever done something unjust or punishable, but I’m just saying that as individuals we should never be too quick to make rash decisions about people on their entire identity and integrity. One place where people are quick to judge and insult other people they don’t really know is the internet. I feel like in today’s world where there are so many forms of information transference many people really don’t get to meet each other before they pass judgment on each other. For example people these days people can technically have “friends” around the entire world that they have never seen except for in pictures and spoken to only in text. I think that this is all well and good but it could be totally different than really going outside and meeting them in person for better or for worse. In general, I feel like this ease of information transmission is hurting humanity because it encourages the pre-judgment and classification of others. I feel like the internet and this information era is also causing the human race to regress in aspects such as communication, and dexterity.
I would be a complete hypocrite if I were to say that the internet is the enemy and that you completely avoid Facebook and Yahoo, and I am not stating this. I am just saying that we should acknowledge that the internet isn't the most solid mode of communication and that we shouldn't be quick to pass judgment on others. I believe that genuinely meeting and getting to know new friends in person is a better choice than meeting behind a computer screen, and I think that others would agree if they just tried it more often. This I believe.

Me and Yaodong's Real Talk Video

Real Talk Final Transcript W.T. & Y.J.

Phase Four - Revised Transcript

According to Jean Baudrillard, symbols and signs have replaced all reality and meaning, creating a human experience similar to reality.

Is it ever possible to avoid these simulacra and actually see reality?

W: William Taylor Y: Yaodong Jia

W: Sorry I am late for our meeting.
Y: What happened? Did you get caught up in a traffic jam?
W: Not really. It's just that I got lost following the misleading traffic signs on the side of the road.
Y: Oh how can they be misleading? They should be correct. I never got lost by them. Tell me about it.
W: Well today, I learned the hard way that not all signs with a large picture of book on them will lead you to library; instead, the signs led me to the bookstore.
Y: Oh really? I've never noticed that.

W: This isn’t even the first time that signs have misled me. These symbols, like the sign with the book on it, try to represent real people, places, and things, but in reality they are usually different.
Y: Like a simulation of real things?
W: Exactly. For example there are signs everywhere without instructions. I don’t think that all of these sign designers can really translate what they want to say into pictures and signs. The signs themselves are not necessarily the real.
Y: Yes, signs are just symbols. But the same as the translation, even words may lie.
W: That's true. So sometimes I'd just like to rely on my own perception to identify the reality.
Y: Your own perception? So how do you think that you could find this library without any map?
W: Maybe I can search the route on internet?
Y: That's the same thing isn't it? You didn’t invent the internet and it is not your perception. The only way you could truly rely on your own is to just walk around, using your own senses to remember everything, rather than any other tools. But how could you do that if you even do not know where the library is?
W: Well.... I have no clue.
Y: Though sometimes they can be misleading, I don't think anyone can escape from internet, signs and symbols, escape from such culture of simulation and replacement of all reality. For example, there are lane lines on the road, and they just represent rigid barriers that no one should drive across these lines. They are really just paints, giving us a human experience of simulation of real limit, but nobody can drive without them.
W: But I’m pretty sure that not everyone in the whole world is bound by symbols like we /are.
Y: /Oh?
W: Have you ever heard of the Amish people?
Y: What people?
W: The Amish people. They are a very conservative group of Americans. I know that they live in various locations on the east coast, like upstate New York…=
Y: =Oh I have heard a bit of that.
W: And they base their whole lives on strict religious policies. They live pretty simple lives and they are reluctant to adopt the many conveniences of Modern technology.
Y: They live without any modern technology like internet right?
W: Yeah. Compared to us, I feel like they actually live more natural and more real lives. They never get misled by signs and symbols on their own land.
Y: So maybe a way to be free from signs is to be free from technology and advanced culture? Well... what do you think about this?
W: I think that’s right. Technology really plays a large role in simulating reality and creating simulacra.
Y: =Yeah. It is the technology that binds us to such inescapable simulation and to be ... Oh wait a minute. I find a problem here.
W: What’s the Problem?

Y: Well think about this: Aren't the Amish people themselves living in a simulacrum of the past?
W: What do you mean?
Y: I mean that the lifestyle of Amish people itself is a kind of simulation. Amish people they do successfully escape from signs and internet, devils of modern world, but they fall into another trap of simulating the past.
W: I kind of agree with you there. They might be living in a simulation of the past because technology comes hand in hand with progress and the Amish are trying to avoid it entirely.
Y: Yeah but they failed. So even if we are free from science and technology, like Amish people, we are still not free. But, if so, what bind us to such simulation? Or maybe symbolization and simulation is just human nature?
W: I have no idea….So I guess that the argument can be made both ways. It’s safe to say that it's impossible to completely avoid these simulacra and truly see reality.=
Y: Yeah, to some degree. Nobody can avoid misleading. Anyway, this discussion is not our objective right?
W: Oh yeah I’ve almost forgot, have you received the e-mail from Harkey about the Realtalk assignment?
Y: Oh not yet. What's that?

But suppose that a person, whether by telling a lie or in another way, misrepresents something else. Then he necessarily misrepresents at least two things. He misrepresents whatever he is talking about — i.e., the state of affairs that is the topic or referent of his discourse — and in doing this he cannot avoid misrepresenting his own mind as well. Thus, someone who lies about how much money he has in his pocket both gives an account of the amount of money in his pocket and conveys that he believes this account. If the lie works, then its victim is twice deceived, having one false belief about what is in the liar’s pocket and another false belief about what is in the liar’s mind.

My summary of Karla Holloway "Henrietta Lacks and the Ethics of Privacy" lecture

9/25/12
Location:  Clary Theater, Student Success Center
Time: 5:00 P.M.
I attended this activity on September 25th after getting an E-mail persuading me to attend. After reading this book by Rebecca Skloot over the summer, my curiosity was piqued and I was anxious to attend this seminar by this woman who I didn’t know. The only background information that I knew about this woman was that she was an English professor from Duke and that she too was an author. I also knew that the event was hosted by Dean Stephanie Ray and the Office of Diversity Programs, so I knew that it would be worthwhile. At the beginning of Dr. Holloway’s lecture she talked about her book, “Private Bodies, Public Texts”, and other narratives. She asked very powerful and rhetorical questions that kept me interested. She brought up many topics such as the controversial story in the news about the vegetative wife and whether having her plug pulled was ethical and the political unrest in Libya. She just talks about various forms of literature in her intro including, the Maury Povich show, the Jerry Springer show, and the real housewives of Atlanta  to criticize the portrayal of women in these narratives and real world examples. She is very concerned about women’s rights topics such as contraception and abortion. She brings up these women’s issues to lead into the topic of ethical inequity with regards to Henrietta Lacks. She acknowledges how the story of Henrietta Lacks can be told about herself and the spectacle created as well as the impact on her family. A big theme she speaks about is vulnerability and the effects of people’s natural and societal characteristics on the theme. She speaks a little extensively on the Tuskegee medical issues in the past and medicine as well as hurricane Katrina and other topics effecting predominately African-American demographics. One technique that Holloway uses is that she places the author of “The Immortal Life”, Rebecca Skloot, under a figurative microscope, and calls the pursuit of the Lacks family in general by the medical community, unethical. She is intrigued by the story and calls the story itself a hijacking or a “bamboozling” because the book makes more prevalent the exposure and blackmailing of the information and the family narrative itself. She brings up the question of “What is Ethical?” and the invasion of privacy by sources such as the news. She mentions that the book may have many ethical violations but doesn’t force any issues. In her opinion this book violated private bodies and she believes that privacy is being lost. She brings up a point that the majority of exploitation and violation of privacy happens to women and minorities, as supposed to white heterosexual men. She believes that many of the facets of the book released information with social stigmas that didn’t need to be released. She poses the question why did we need to know this touchy and extra specific information. She believes this exploitation was too much. She criticizes the information that exposed scientific illiteracy and how the book gives us bad impressions of characters especially Henrietta’s daughter Deborah. She talked about many more topics but these were just a few key aspects of the presentation that stood out to me. I enjoyed this lecture and it made me think deeper about the Henrietta Lacks book.

My Discussion Questions on Jane McGonigal, Reality is Broken w/ Video

Jane McGonigal, Reality is Broken & TED talk:

In the book Reality Is Broken by Jane McGonigal, she talks about games that would help to progress society and that could benefit our lives. How could this happen with all of the competition between videogame and platforming companies and the fact that the videogame industry is really just a businesses with the intent of making a lot of money?  Also if  McGonigal says that the real world is currently unable to satisfy peoples needs of people and their needs of achievement, how is solving real world problems in videogame form going to be able to distinguish itself from reality itself and stay satisfying?

This is a meme about Friday Night Lights. This is a show details the events surrounding a high school football team from a fictional town called Dillon Texas.
The show uses its small town backdrop to address many issues facing contemporary American culture, including school funding, racism, drugs, abortion, and lack of economic opportunities [which are some pretty relevant and real topics].

Imagining the Tenth Dimension

This is the Video that i mentioned in my previous post.
Warning: this video might hurt your brain

Excerpt from Brian Greene the Hidden Reality and response

"A striking fact (it's in part what propelled me to write this book) is that many of the major developments in fundamental theoretical physics — relativistic physics, quantum physics, cosmological physics, unified physics, computational physics — have led us to consider one or another variety of parallel universe. Indeed, the chapters that follow trace a narrative arc through nine variations on the multiverse theme. Each envisions our universe as part of an unexpectedly larger whole, but the complexion of that whole and the nature of the member universes differ sharply among them. In some, the parallel universes are separated from us by enormous stretches of space or time; in others, they're hovering millimeters away; in others still, the very notion of their location proves parochial, devoid of meaning. A similar range of possibility is manifest in the laws governing the parallel universes. In some, the laws are the same as in ours; in others, they appear different but have shared a heritage; in others still, the laws are of a form and structure unlike anything we've ever encountered. It's at once humbling and stirring to imagine just how expansive reality may be."

(Excerpted from The Hidden Reality by Brian Greene Copyright 2011 by Brian Greene)

- I feel like the topic of parallel universes and alternate similar dimensions is really complex. I think its amazing that there could be another existence where mostly everything is the same as it is here with minor or major changes. I watched a video on YouTube that spoke about how there are 10 "known" dimensions that dictate the universe and one statement made was that we cant view any of the higher dimensions but that they you and me may exist there under a different set of constants and standards.

Multimodal Synergy?

Some information about my English Class:
A distinctive characteristic of Georgia Tech’s Writing and Communication Program is its focus on multimodal communication—what we call WOVEN communication. Therein lies a challenge: the multi- in multimodality is comprised of different modes that students need to analyze and practice. However, a risk occurs when we treat the modes as discrete: when we have a writing assignment, an oral assignment, a visual assignment, and perhaps even a nonverbal assignment as a way to meet the letter rather than the spirit of multimodality, our students might miss the synergy that characterizes most effective communication.
Excellent course design includes lessons that focus on each mode individually but equally emphasizes activities and assignments that showcase the ways in which modalities are integrated. Put another way, we understand multimodality as the synergy of written¬–oral–visual–nonverbal communication, whether in print or digital form, whether face to face or at a distance. Even when we have an activity or assignment that focuses on writing or orality or visual displays, we need to help our students understand how all the modes are at play even when they are not spotlighted. To help students to reflect on this synergy, WOVENText, the e-book for English 1101 and English 1102, has a custom chapter called “Multimodal Synergy.”
When we consider individual modes, we generally use an approach summarized in the following five subsections.
Written
Oral
Visual
Electronic
Nonverbal
